Beach to Bay is the largest relay marathon in the United States. We have runners of all levels of experience participating. To make the race more enjoyable for everyone, now is a good time to review a few “rules of the road for savvy runners”.
A few training rules:
If you train on a track, the slower lanes are to the outside of the track. Don’t block faster runners by hogging the inside curve all round.
If you train with friends, don’t run/walk more than two abreast on a track or roadway.
Don’t just stop to pick something up or look at something. Look behind and step to the right/outside before stopping.
Leave the pets at home. Large crowds can provoke unexpected responses from dogs.
You may have the right of way but cars will always win the argument. Yield to run again.
Some races rules:
Many of the above also apply: slower should run to the right, don’t stop unannounced, no pets, and two- abreast limit.
Yield the right of way to emergency vehicles, athletes who use wheel chairs for mobility and athletes with disabilities.
Race numbers go on the front of your clothing. Only at track meets are numbers worn on the back.
Say thanks to the volunteers keeping your course safe as you go by.
If you are not racing, move to the extreme right or left. DO NOT BLOCK THE COURSE!
At the start, line up in a realistic spot in the crowd. The front row is for FAST runners! After the race:
Stay for the awards ceremony even if you didn’t win. Congratulate your fellow competitors. When you win, it will be nice to hear the applause for you.
Don’t be piggy with giveaways. This is not an all you can eat event.
Once you cross the finish line, keep moving. You may not want a personal relationship with the person who is about to rear end you.
Be proud of your accomplishments. You and your team just completed the largest relay marathon in the United States
